"Most [psychological] injuries are sustained in the middle of Character work not before or after".
Dr. Suzie J. Jarmain

Actor Care® was developed for actors who engage in stories with traumatic themes. It supports resilience, and the management of emotional and psychological experiences of Character.

When it comes to the emotional and psychological embodiment of Characters, it can be a lonely and slippery road. It surpasses the support an acting coach can offer, is not the responsibility of an intimacy coordinator, and is not necessarily a therapist's domain. It's in this space where Actor Care® begins.

When actors encounter their characters' psychological and emotional complexity, resilience and vulnerability must work together to support successful wellbeing outcomes, and transformative and sustainable performances.

Actor Care® provides tools to explore, embody and acclimatize to your Character's internal life. It prioritises actor well-being while you bravely navigate your creative journey. It is an important part of actor preparation when working with distressing themes or any Character that is emotionally challenging.

“I can be vulnerable and still safe”

During production of trauma-based stories your responsibility as an actor is to ensure your emotional and psychological resilience. That's not to say you shouldn't take risks. Consciously managing your activation (in and/or out of Character) is mastery of your craft. It's not only empowering, it also contributes to a professional and healthy atmosphere at work.
